At Big Brain Math League, we believe many students struggle with math because they are asked to tackle complex reasoning tasks before they have mastered the foundational skills those tasks require.

Over the past fifteen years, math education has increasingly emphasized conceptual understanding, mathematical discourse, and real-world applications. While these skills are important, many students never develop the computational fluency needed to fully benefit from them.

According to national assessment data, approximately 61% of fourth-grade students are not proficient in mathematics. The numbers are even lower for some student groups.

We believe many students are being asked to perform higher-level mathematical thinking before they have developed automaticity with the fundamentals.

Before students can confidently solve complex word problems, analyze patterns, or explain mathematical relationships, they must first become comfortable with the basic language of mathematics.

Just as children learn letters before writing essays, students should develop strong arithmetic skills before being expected to engage in sophisticated mathematical reasoning.

Why We Emphasize Practice

Why We Limit Calculator Use

At Big Brain Math League, calculators are used sparingly and only when developmentally appropriate.

Many students have become overly dependent on calculators for basic operations such as multiplication, division, fractions, and decimal computations.

While calculators are valuable tools in higher-level mathematics, relying on them too early can prevent students from developing the strong number sense and computational fluency they need for long-term success.

Students who depend heavily on calculators often:

  • Forget basic math facts
  • Struggle with estimation
  • Have difficulty recognizing unreasonable answers
  • Lack confidence when solving problems by hand
  • Experience greater challenges with fractions, algebra, and standardized tests
