Multiplication 2 (Class 2)

Multiplication 2 is designed for students entering grades 5–7 who have a basic understanding of the standard multiplication algorithm and are ready to work with larger and more challenging numbers. This course strengthens students’ ability to organize their work, apply place value correctly, and complete advanced multi-digit multiplication problems with accuracy and confidence.

Each class begins with a brief review of multiplication facts and previously learned concepts. Students then receive direct instruction and guided practice on increasingly complex problems, including multiplying 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by numbers containing up to four digits. Special attention is given to lining up partial products, regrouping correctly, and checking answers using estimation.

Topics Covered

  • Review of multiplication facts and place value
  • Multiplying 2-digit numbers by up to 4-digit numbers
  • Multiplying 3-digit numbers by up to 4-digit numbers
  • Organizing multiple partial products
  • Regrouping across several place values
  • Estimating to verify answers
  • Identifying and correcting common errors

Instructional Methods

  • Teacher-led mini lessons
  • Step-by-step guided examples
  • Pre-made worksheets
  • Interactive online games (Kahoot, Blooket, and mental math challenges)
  • Independent practice with teacher support

End-of-Week Application

On Friday, students solve multi-step multiplication word problems that require them to apply the standard algorithm in realistic situations. These application problems help students connect computational fluency to practical problem solving.

Ideal For Students Who:

  • Can multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers but need more practice
  • Struggle with larger multiplication problems
  • Make errors organizing partial products
  • Need to strengthen place value understanding
  • Want to be well prepared for upper-level math

By the end of the course, students will be able to accurately solve large multi-digit multiplication problems using the standard algorithm and apply these skills to challenging real-world situations.
