Our Teaching Approach
How Big Brain Math Academy Delivers Results Without Expensive Textbooks
At Big Brain Math Academy, our goal is simple:
Help students truly understand math—not just complete assignments.
Our program is built on a proven instructional approach that combines high-quality resources, live teaching, and targeted practice to maximize student success.
📘 Standards-Based Instruction
All lessons are aligned with generally accepted U.S. math standards, ensuring that students:
- Learn grade-level appropriate content
- Build skills in the correct progression
- Are fully prepared for standardized assessments such as the Iowa Assessments
🚫 Why We Don’t Use Traditional Textbooks
Unlike many programs, we do not rely on a single textbook.
Why?
Because real results don’t come from one book.
As a classroom teacher, I achieved 81% math proficiency in Grade 4 by using a combination of instructional resources, not a single curriculum.
Textbooks often:
- Move too fast or too slow
- Lack enough practice
- Fail to address individual student needs
🧮 Why We Limit Calculator Use
At Big Brain Math Academy, calculators are used sparingly and only when they are developmentally appropriate.
Many students have become overly dependent on calculators for basic operations such as multiplication, division, fractions, and decimal computations. While calculators are valuable tools in higher-level mathematics, relying on them too early can prevent students from developing the strong number sense and computational fluency they need for long-term success.
Students who depend heavily on calculators often:
- Forget basic math facts
- Struggle with estimation
- Have difficulty recognizing unreasonable answers
- Lack confidence when solving problems by hand
- Experience greater challenges with fractions, algebra, and standardized tests
Our program emphasizes mastering core arithmetic skills without calculators so that students can:
- Build automatic recall of essential facts
- Strengthen mental math abilities
- Improve accuracy and number sense
- Develop confidence in their own mathematical thinking
Once students demonstrate a solid understanding of the underlying concepts and procedures, calculators may be introduced as appropriate tools rather than crutches.
🎯 Our Philosophy
First, students learn to do the math.
Then, they learn when and how technology can be used effectively.
💡 A Smarter, More Effective Approach
Instead of one textbook, we use a curated mix of the best learning tools available, including:
- Khan Academy for clear video instruction and concept reinforcement
- IXL for targeted skill practice (included with enrollment)
- DeltaMath for structured problem sets
- I Know It for younger learners
- Teacher-created worksheets and guided practice materials
This approach allows us to:
✔ Target exactly what each student needs
✔ Provide more practice than a textbook ever could
✔ Adjust instruction in real time
✔ Keep students engaged and progressing
🎥 Flipped Classroom Model
We use a flipped classroom approach to make the most of live class time.
Before Class
Students watch a short, focused lesson video to learn the concept.
During Class
We focus on:
- Guided practice
- Problem solving
- Addressing misconceptions
- Individual support
This ensures students are actively learning—not passively listening.
🎯 Focus on Mastery, Not Just Completion
Our goal is not to “get through the material.”
Our goal is to ensure students:
- Understand concepts deeply
- Can apply skills independently
- Gain confidence in their abilities
Students will regularly work on:
- Multi-step problems
- Real-world applications
- Review and reinforcement
🧠 Building Independent Thinkers
We intentionally design lessons to help students:
- Think critically
- Explain their reasoning
- Solve unfamiliar problems
These are the skills that lead to long-term success in math.
📝 Test Preparation (When Needed)
For families whose children will be taking standardized tests, additional preparation will be built into the program.
Toward the end of the school year, parents may be asked to purchase an Iowa Assessments practice workbook (approximately $40) to provide targeted test preparation.
💰 Cost-Effective for Families
By not requiring a traditional textbook, families benefit from:
- Lower overall costs
- Access to multiple high-quality resources
- A more personalized learning experience
💡 The Bottom Line
Big Brain Math Academy combines:
- Proven teaching experience
- High-quality digital tools
- Live instruction and support
- A flexible, student-centered approach
The result is a program that helps students build confidence, master math, and achieve real results.
