Multiplication 2 is designed for students entering grades 5–7 who have a basic understanding of the standard multiplication algorithm and are ready to work with larger and more challenging numbers. This course strengthens students’ ability to organize their work, apply place value correctly, and complete advanced multi-digit multiplication problems with accuracy and confidence.
Each class begins with a brief review of multiplication facts and previously learned concepts. Students then receive direct instruction and guided practice on increasingly complex problems, including multiplying 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by numbers containing up to four digits. Special attention is given to lining up partial products, regrouping correctly, and checking answers using estimation.
On Friday, students solve multi-step multiplication word problems that require them to apply the standard algorithm in realistic situations. These application problems help students connect computational fluency to practical problem solving.
By the end of the course, students will be able to accurately solve large multi-digit multiplication problems using the standard algorithm and apply these skills to challenging real-world situations.
