The Grade 8 Math program at Big Brain Math Academy is a comprehensive, full-year course designed to prepare students for the transition into Algebra 1 and high school mathematics.

This course provides the structure, consistency, and expert instruction needed to help students develop strong algebraic thinking, problem-solving ability, and mathematical confidence.

📘 What Students Will Learn

Throughout the year, students will develop mastery in the following key areas:

Linear Equations & Functions

Students will begin formal algebraic reasoning by learning to:

  • solve linear equations
  • understand and use function notation
  • interpret and graph linear relationships
  • analyze patterns and relationships between variables

Systems of Equations

Students will learn how to:

  • solve systems of linear equations
  • interpret solutions in real-world contexts
  • understand how multiple equations interact

Exponents & Scientific Notation

Students will develop fluency with exponential concepts, including:

  • laws of exponents
  • writing and simplifying exponential expressions
  • using scientific notation to represent large and small numbers

Geometry

Students will deepen their geometry understanding by learning:

  • the Pythagorean theorem and its applications
  • distance between points
  • volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres
  • solving real-world geometry problems

Expressions & Algebraic Reasoning

Students will continue developing algebra skills by learning to:

  • simplify and evaluate expressions
  • work with variables and formulas
  • solve multi-step equations
  • apply algebra to real-world situations

Data Analysis & Modeling

Students will learn to analyze and interpret data by:

  • understanding scatter plots and trends
  • identifying relationships between variables
  • modeling real-world situations mathematically

🔄 Instructional Approach

This program uses a flipped classroom model to maximize learning.

Before Class

Students watch a short, custom lesson video (5–8 minutes) to learn the concept at their own pace.

During Class

Live sessions focus on:

  • guided practice
  • problem solving
  • answering questions
  • correcting mistakes

This approach ensures students are actively engaged while receiving immediate feedback and support.

🗓 Schedule & Structure

  • Classes meet 3 times per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)
  • Each class is 50 minutes
  • The program runs from August through May
  • Includes breaks for:
    • Thanksgiving
    • Christmas / Winter Break
    • Spring Break

📝 Practice & Assessment

Students will complete:

  • regular homework assignments
  • multi-step problem solving
  • periodic quizzes and reviews
  • practice aligned with standardized assessments such as the Iowa Assessments

🎯 Program Goals

By the end of the course, students will:

  • demonstrate strong understanding of pre-algebra concepts
  • confidently solve algebraic and real-world problems
  • develop readiness for Algebra 1
  • improve mathematical reasoning and critical thinking
  • build independence and confidence in math

👨‍🏫 Who This Course Is For

This course is ideal for homeschool students who:

  • are ready for advanced pre-algebra concepts
  • need structured math instruction
  • benefit from clear explanations and guided support
  • want to build confidence before entering Algebra 1
  • are preparing for standardized assessments

💡 Final Note

Grade 8 is the final step before Algebra 1. This program ensures students develop the skills, understanding, and confidence needed to successfully transition into high school math and beyond.
