Grade 7 Math — Full Program Description
The Grade 7 Math program at Big Brain Math Academy is a comprehensive, full-year course designed to transition students into pre-algebra and prepare them for the demands of Algebra 1.
This course provides the structure, consistency, and expert instruction needed to help students move beyond basic computation and begin thinking more abstractly about mathematics.
📘 What Students Will Learn
Throughout the year, students will develop mastery in the following key areas:
Rational Numbers
Students will learn to work fluently with rational numbers, including:
- adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers
- operations with fractions and decimals
- understanding positive and negative numbers
- applying rational number operations in real-world problems
Ratios, Proportions & Percent
Students will strengthen their proportional reasoning by learning to:
- solve ratio and proportion problems
- work with unit rates
- calculate percent increase and decrease
- apply percent to real-world situations such as discounts and tax
Expressions & Equations
Students will develop algebraic thinking through:
- writing and simplifying expressions
- solving one-step and multi-step equations
- solving inequalities
- translating word problems into algebraic equations
Geometry
Students will expand their understanding of geometry by learning:
- angle relationships
- area and circumference of circles
- surface area and volume of three-dimensional figures
- solving geometry problems in real-world contexts
Probability & Data Analysis
Students will build skills in analyzing and interpreting data, including:
- understanding probability
- analyzing data sets
- interpreting graphs and charts
- solving real-world data problems
🔄 Instructional Approach
This program uses a flipped classroom model to maximize learning.
Before Class
Students watch a short, custom lesson video (5–8 minutes) to learn the concept at their own pace.
During Class
Live sessions focus on:
- guided practice
- problem solving
- answering questions
- correcting mistakes
This approach ensures students are actively engaged and supported as they develop deeper understanding.
🗓 Schedule & Structure
- Classes meet 3 times per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)
- Each class is 50 minutes
- The program runs from August through May
- Includes breaks for:
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas / Winter Break
- Spring Break

Students will complete:
- regular homework assignments
- multi-step word problems
