The Grade 4 Math program at Big Brain Math Academy is aย comprehensive, full-year course designed to build strong mathematical foundations while developing confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills.

This course is specifically created for homeschool students and provides the structure, consistency, and expert instruction many families need to ensure success in math.

Students will learn to work with numbers up to one million, including:

  • writing numbers in standard and expanded form

  • rounding to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000
  • recognizing patterns and estimating

Addition & Subtraction

Students will build fluency and accuracy with:

  • multi-digit addition and subtraction
  • regrouping strategies
  • estimation
  • solving real-world and multi-step word problems

Multiplication

Students will develop a deep understanding of multiplication through:

  • arrays and area models
  • multiplication facts and fluency
  • multiplying 2-digit, 3-digit, and 4-digit numbers
  • estimating products
  • solving real-world and multi-step problems

Division

Students will learn division conceptually and procedurally, including:

  • division as equal groups
  • division facts
  • long division (with and without remainders)
  • interpreting remainders in real-world situations
  • multi-step problem solving

Fractions

Students will gain a strong foundation in fractions by learning:

  • how fractions represent parts of a whole
  • equivalent and simplified fractions
  • comparing fractions
  • adding and subtracting fractions
  • working with mixed numbers and improper fractions
  • solving real-world fraction problems

Decimals

Students will be introduced to decimals and learn to:

  • understand place value for tenths and hundredths
  • compare decimals
  • add and subtract decimals
  • apply decimals in real-world situations

Measurement

Students will explore measurement concepts such as:

  • units of length, weight, and capacity
  • converting units
  • telling time and solving elapsed time problems
  • finding perimeter and area

Geometry

Students will develop foundational geometry skills, including:

  • identifying lines and angles
  • classifying angles (acute, right, obtuse)
  • measuring and drawing angles using a protractor
  • identifying triangles and quadrilaterals

Data & Graphs

Students will learn how to interpret and analyze data through:

This program uses a flipped classroom model to maximize learning.

Before Class

Students watch a short, custom lesson video (5โ€“8 minutes) to learn the concept at their own pace.

During Class

Live sessions focus on:

  • answering questions
  • correcting mistakes

This approach allows students to spend more time actively engaging with math rather than passively listening.

  • Classes meet 3 times per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)
  • Each class is 50 minutes
  • The program runs from August through May
  • Includes breaks for:
    • Thanksgiving
    • Christmas / Winter Break
    • Spring Break
